  Bartels lab presents Molecule Carrier  
Based on previous work on "walking molecules", the Bartels group showed that anthraquinone cannot only cross a surface in a straight fashion, but also carry "cargo" molecules, thereby acting as a molecule-scale transport mechanism. More

  Betrand Group Develops Carbenes for Hydrogen Storage  
A limitation in using hydrogen as a fuel in hydrogen-powered vehicles is the difficulty involved in storing it. The Betrand group developed a cyclic alkyl amino carbene capable of storing hydrogen with similar efficiency as conventionally used metals yet lighter and potentially environmentally more benign. More

  Breast Cancer Research in the Wang Group  
Yinsheng Wang and his former graduate student Yan Zou reported that the expression and the post-translational modifications of HMGA1 proteins in human breast cancer tissues are correlated with the development of malignancy. This finding may lead to the discovery of molecular biomarkers for the diagnosis of breast tumors. More

The Analytical Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society awards Stacie Eldridge, fourth year graduate student in the Larive lab, a 2008-2009 graduate fellowship in a national competition. The award is sponsored by Procter and Gamble.

  Vincent Lavallo has received an ACS Young Investigator Award for 2008  
The Inorganic Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society has awarded Vincent Lavallo, third year graduate student in the Bertrand lab, a 2008 Young Investigator Award in a national competition. Vince will give his award presentation at the Philadelphia ACS meeting in August. More

Ryan Pedigo has been selected as the Outstanding Student of the College (CNAS) for 2008. In addition to his outstanding academic record Ryan is submitting an Honors undergraduate research thesis has performed undergraduate research on heterogeneous catalysis with Francisco Zaera, for which he was awarded a Deans Fellowship in 2006. Ryan will be heading to medical school in the Fall.

  Distinguished Campus Service Award for Gary Scott  
Gary Scott, Professor of Chemistry, received the Distinguished Campus Service Award for 2006-07 for meritorious service as Associate Dean of Student Affairs of CNAS while maintaining an active research program and participating in graduate and undergraduate teaching in the Chemistry Department. Professor Scott also was noted for his serving on the college Executive Committee, Graduate Council, and as Chair of the subcommittee on courses and programs.

Professor Guy Betrand and collaborators have found a new, carbene-based gold catalyst for the formation of amines in a one-step fashion. Through this Green Chemistry breakthrough costly and wasteful current two-step processess can be avoided. More

  Guy Bertrand has been awarded the 2009-10 Sir Ronald Nyholm Lectureship of the RSC  
Dr. Guy Bertrand has been awarded the 2009-2010 Sir Ronald Nyholm Lectureship of the Royal Society of Chemistry. The lectures are concerned with subjects of interest to the Education or Dalton Divisions and the international interests of Sir Ronald Nyholm. Dr. Bertrand will receive a Silver medal and £500. More

  Julian Research Group Pinpoints Phosphorylation Sites  
Dr. Julian and Jolene K. Diedrich devised a photofragmentation approach that permits selective breakage of peptide backbones at phosphorylated serine and threonine residues which will render it more facile to pinpoint phosporylation sites. More

  US Pharmacopeia Graduate Fellowships for John Limtiaco  
Congratulations to John Limtiaco for winning one of six US Pharmacopeia Graduate Fellowships. These awards promote education and training of Fellows in the sciences that are applicable to the standardization of drugs, food ingredients, dietary supplements, and other applicable healthcare articles.   New Heterogeneous Catalysts from the Zaera Lab.  
In a recent article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of the United States, Dr. Zaera reports on the development of a method for the synthesis of Platinum catalytic nanoparticles of well defined size and shape (e.g. cubic, tetrahedral) that provide high selectivity in catalytic interconversion of cis and trans olefins. More

  Professor Larive recognized as 2008 AAAS Fellow  
Chemistry professor Cynthia Larive is one of 13 UCR researchers recognized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science as a 2008 AAAS fellow. Larive received this recognition for significant contributions in applying NMR diffusion measurements to characterize complex mixtures, polydisperse samples, and ligand-protein interactions. More

  Catalysis Research in the Zaera Lab  
Dr. Zaera, in an article just published on line in Nature Materials, reports on the ability by his group to prepare catalysts based on well-shaped platinum particles to control selectivity in hydrogenation processes away from the formation of trans olefins. More

On March 16th-19th the American Physical Society held the March Meeting in Pittsburgh, the largest physics meeting in the United States. Its program book showed on the cover results from the Bartels Group.

  Chemistry Graduate Students at the 2009 Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau, Germany  
UCR Chemistry graduate students Matthew Linman and Tony Ly have been selected to join 500 young researchers from around the world at the 59th meeting of Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry this summer in Lindau, Germany. The Lindau Nobel Laureate meetings provide a globally recognized forum for the exchange of knowledge between Nobel Laureates and young researchers. More

  Amy Ferreira selected to receive the 2009 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Researc  
Amy Ferreira has been selected to receive the 2009 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence in Undergraduate Research. Amy has performed research with Dr. Vullev on charge transfer applications in solar energy, and last summer she performed research on methanol fuel cells at the Technical University in Munich. Next year she will be pursuing a PhD in physical chemistry at UCLA and she has just been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.

Professor Thomas Morton has been selected to receive the 2009 Chancellor’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Undergraduate Research. Dr. Morton has tirelessly mentored undergraduates. His broad interests allow him to identify potential research interests in almost any student. Many students recognize their interaction with Professor Morton as life changing and they express great appreciation for his mentoring.

Professor Yadong Yin has been named a 2009 Cottrell Scholar for his proposal entitled “Self-Assembly of Superparamagnetic Colloids to Field-Responsive Photonic Crystals”. This honor carries with it an award of $100K. More

  New Fabricated Material Changes Color Instantly In Response to External Magnetic Field  
A research team led by Yadong Yin has fabricated microscopic polymer beads that change color instantly and reversibly when external magnetic fields change their orientation. Applications include displays such as rewritable or reusable papers and magnetically activated security features. More

Professor Chia-en Chang as been awarded the 2010 HP Outstanding Junior Faculty award from the ACS Division of Computers in Chemistry. Winners are selected for the novelty and potential impact of their research. The award will be presented at the Fall ACS National Meeting in Washington, DC, and will be recognized in the August 24 issue of C&EN. Dr. Chang has also been invited to give an oral presentation as one of the best young researchers in the field of computational chemistry. More
