Scholarly Activity

As a professor teaching, the focus of my scholarly activity is primarily within the field of chemical education. I am most interested pedagogical approaches that increase student engagement, interest and attitudes with respect to organic chemistry, as well as increasing student understanding in this area. My specific interests are on studying the effectiveness of active learning approaches (flipped classroom) in large-enrollment courses (i.e. CHEM 8) and how assessment might be used to increase student engagement and learning gains. To enhance active learning in large-enrollment courses, I work with undergraduate students as learning assistants to provide near-peer mentorship during collaborative problem solving sessions as well as develop new lecture tutorials to better guide students to understand organic chemistry concepts better. In addition to lecture courses, I am interested in bringing authentic research experience and modern techniques in organic chemistry and synthesis into advanced chemistry laboratory courses.
